The Bigger Picture

Senior Project

The purpose of my project is to educate individuals on climate change and its many effects on ecosystems, cultures, resources, and society itself.  When approaching this project, I wanted to grab the attention of my audience with something entertaining but had a deeper meaning and required them to understand the story to recognize how urgent this issue is.  That said, I decided to code a digital zoetrope using P5js and the illustrations I would design myself. A zoetrope is a device that includes imagery and requires the user to spin the device to see the story animation; I want my audience to recognize that we as individuals choose to see the bigger picture the zoetrope has to present but why can’t we choose to acknowledge climate/environment crisis and apply it to our daily lives.

I was inspired by Leah Thomas's book "The Intersectional Environmentalist: How to Dismantle Systems of Oppression to Protect People + Planet" where she discusses the definition of interdisciplinary environmentalism and how climate/environmental crisis has impacted several communities more than others, leading to cultural, economical, and physical damage. I wanted to further explore this ideology and be part of the change. Another inspiration was digital artist, Joseph Nechvatal, and his work with computer viruses; his main objective was to expose users to their emotions towards computer viruses and how that same emotion/concern should apply to HIV. His use of technology to bring awareness has been the inspiration for all of my previous artworks and will continue to be.
